Simon Leedie
Simon Leedie and his son Elgan Leedie discuss their family’s history of service, and Elgan recounts his own years in the Australian Army. Simon’s uncle joined the Army during the First World War, dying at age 23 in Belgium. Elgan joined the Australian Army in the early 1980s, served with 2nd/4th Battalion RAR in Townsville, and as a regimental policeman in Darwin. Elgan left the regular Army to join NORFORCE in which he served 14 years and rose to the rank of sergeant. He then served a further two years in the Reserves in Townsville before leaving the Army in 2006. Elgan was a bugler and a piper in the Army, and thoroughly enjoyed his service. He continues to play the bugle at memorial services around the country, and has visited the memorial at Ypres, where his great-uncle’s name is listed.
