Robert & Daphne Lowe's interview in Warrnambool

Robert Lowe talks about his uncle Norman John ‘Piebald’ Clarke who served in the Army during World War 2. Uncle Norman did not ever speak to Robert about his service, indeed Robert only learned of his uncle’s service as a result of his involvement in research into the wider history of Aboriginal soldiers from the southwest of Victoria, which resulted in regional Victoria’s first dedicated memorial to Aboriginal soldiers, unveiled in Warnambool in 2010, and which Robert speaks about at length in this interview. Daphne Lowe also speaks briefly about her uncle Leo Lovett who served in Korea, and other family members who may have served.

This interview took place on 5 March 2015 in Warrnambool and was conducted by Professor Mick Dodson and Dr Allison Cadzow with Craig Greene as part of the Australian Research Council-funded research project Serving our Country: a history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the defence of Australia.
