CHRIS UHLMANN: Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders fought for their country in every conflict, yet their stories are still largely unknown. But a new project led by researchers at the Australian National University is hoping to fix that. With up to 7,000 Indigenous veterans, war widows and dependants around Australia it’s expected to take four years.

Professor Mick Dodson is the director of the Centre for Indigenous Studies and he’s overseeing the “Serving our Country” initiative.

MICK DODSON: We’re interested in why people joined up, what they did in the military particularly, overseas service but we’re concerned with service generally. And we want to know what happened when they came home. Were things different, were they the same, did things get better, did they get worse?
