Major Lancelot Sumner

Major Lancelot Sumner

Major Lancelot Sumner talks about the contribution of Ngarrindjeri people to World War One, Vietnam and Korea, including his own family’s history of service. Lancelot reflects on the motivations of aboriginal men enlisting to go and fight in foreign lands, he believes many of them would have had very limited if any understanding of the reasons behind the wars they were fighting. He also talks about the pride of the aboriginal community in these men’s service, but also the racism and lack of recognition from the wider community when they came back, including not being entitled to soldier settlement land or health benefits.
